To the editor:

In regard to the article "Provincial conference of Residents: Towards Excellence in Postgraduate Teaching",1 published in the first issue of volume 10 of the EDUMECENTRO Journal this year, we wish to congratulate the authors for the organization of an event of that type and for briefly socializing what happened there. This conference is an example to follow because events like this are not systematically appreciated.

We believe that the organization of these events should extend to all healthcare centers and include all the specialties. The participation of the residents must be general, regardless of the year they are studying in. At the beginning it is logical that they present (gradually increasing the complexity): reviews on their research topic, their research projects and partial results; and in the terminal years: the final results of their projects, the conclusions they reached and the experiences derived from the researching process. The participation of tutors (fundamentally in the first years of the residency) would favor obtaining a final work of higher quality.

The scientific conferences of residents contribute to the improvement of researching skills and the development of cognitive independence for the achievement of a more competent professional. Research competence is understood as the system of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for the planning and implementation of scientific research, participation in research tasks linked to prioritized problems, evaluation of research, as well as what is related to scientific publication.2

It is necessary to consider that the competence-based training approach, which stands as one of the ways to approach the achievement of the desired quality in university graduates, it is relevant when addressing research competencies. This approach is based on the systematization related to the reasoning and deductions emanated from scholars at national and international level.2-4

In order to achieve this task, the authors consider that it is necessary to understand training as a totalizing process that brings together, in a dialectical unit, the instructional, educational and developing processes with actions that aim to develop in individuals the capacity to act, consciously, in their role as agents conducive to the development of society through work, from which man is prepared as a social being. The authors agree with Cejas, quoted by Rodríguez Fernández et al., who points out that "... in the field of training (...) this activity aims to develop the skills of workers and help achieve the objectives".3

The authors consider that the promotion of this type of scientific activity is relevant and priority, which in fact is in accordance with the updating of the Guidelines of the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution, in which it is stated that it is necessary continue to promote the development of social and humanistic research on the priority issues of the life of society, as well as perfecting the methods of introducing their results in decision-making at the different levels.5

Once again we reiterate our congratulations and appreciation for the type of activity carried out.
