Abstract

Addictions are currently one of the main problems faced by psychologists of the health sector; therefore, it is imperative that those who work in this field possess the necessary competences in the prevention and treatment of addictions. This paper aims to argue the need to develop, in psychologists, the competences in addiction intervention. Sources that corroborate this approach were reviewed and the competences listed in the guide for addictions counseling from the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment were assessed. In conclusion, it reaffirms the need to develop in psychologists the competences in intervention with addicts or individuals with addiction risk.
