Abstract

Introduction: Science and technology are indisputable driving forces in the dynamics of contemporary societies, necessary for solving social problems such as deforming habits.

Objective: To theoretically substantiate, from the Science-Technology-Society approach, the proposal for a professionalization course on guided imagery for the de-stimulation of deforming oral habits.

Methods: A narrative review was conducted between May and June 2025 in the PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases. Original articles, reviews, and theses published between 2019 and 2025 in Spanish and English, and one classic book on the subject were considered. The keywords used were: guided imagery, deforming oral habits, bruxism, mouth breathing, finger sucking, and Science-Technology-Society. 43 documents were reviewed and 17 were selected according to thematic relevance and correspondence with the objective; publications without a direct relationship to guided imagery in health or without verifiable scientific support were excluded.

Development: The systematized evidence supports the use of guided imagery in different deforming oral habits and reveals a cognitive gap among stomatologists, which substantiates, from the Science-Technology-Society approach, the proposal for a professionalization course as a training alternative.

Conclusions: From the Science-Technology-Society approach, the proposal for a professionalization course on guided imagery for the de-stimulation of deforming oral habits is theoretically substantiated, based on its scientific applicability and the existing cognitive gap in dental practice. This justifies a structured training space that articulates scientific knowledge, professional training, and the healthcare context to help overcome the identified epistemic barrier.
