Doctor Guillermo Rodríguez del Pozo: a Villareño in the service of Cuba

Abstract

Background: The history of public health in the central region includes personalities whose actions had national repercussions; however, the legacy of some of them is not well known or disseminated.

Objective: To assess the political and professional work of Dr. Guillermo Rodríguez del Pozo during the Neocolonial Republic and the Revolution in Power.

Methods: A historical investigation was conducted from 2022 to 2025 as part of the Research Project "History of Medicine in Santa Clara during the Neocolonial Republic and the Revolution in Power." Theoretical methods were used, based on the interaction of the historical and the logical and from the temporal and spatial dimensions; as well as empirical methods: documentary analysis and interviews with key informants. Information was processed from primary documents. Methodological triangulation was carried out to reach integrative considerations.

Results: The stages of the personality's life were addressed. His work of national relevance for the development of public health, including revolutionary military health, stands out. Rodríguez del Pozo is one of the most prominent personalities in the 1950s and 1960s in the former province of Las Villas. His work was decisive in the advancement of public health after the revolutionary triumph in Cuba.

Conclusions: An investigation was conducted into the work of Dr. Guillermo Rodríguez del Pozo, whose actions constitute a valuable source of knowledge for the formation of values in future health professionals through medical education.
