Historical-revolutionary becoming and characterization of professional improvement in the Cuban health sector

Introduction: the professional improvement aims at the permanent training and the systematic updating of university graduates, the improvement of the performance of their professional and academic activities, as well as the enrichment of their cultural heritage.Objective: to characterize the main historical and theoretical trends of the process of overcoming Cuban health professionals.
Methods: a systematic literature review was conducted to inquire about the contents of this subject; Original and review articles published between 2000 and 2015 in Spanish and English were considered. The search was carried out in the SciELO and Google Scholar databases from January to December 2018, the keywords used were: “improvement”, “professional improvement”, postgraduate improvement ”.
Development: three periods of the postgraduate training process were established in its historical progression; The strategic intention of bringing health services to the entire population under the principles of free and accessibility, the gradual introduction of advanced technologies and the perspective planning of training and development of human resources in undergraduate and postgraduate courses were highlighted.
Conclusions: like all activity, postgraduate education changes and must be perfected in accordance with the development of society while transforming it, in order to meet its objectives of offering continuity and updating in the knowledge of health professionals .
