Abstract

Introduction: Surgical simulation has become established as an essential pedagogical tool in postgraduate training in the specialty of General Surgery, in response to current ethical and technological challenges.

Objective: To analyse the theoretical-methodological foundations and perspectives of surgical simulation in postgraduate education in the specialty of General Surgery.

Methods: A systematic bibliographic review was conducted in SciELO, PubMed, LILACS, and Google Scholar for the period 2016–2025, using the descriptors: surgical simulation, teaching method, advanced education, and medical education. Through theoretical methods (analytical-synthetic, historical-logical, inductive-deductive) and criteria of currency and scientific rigor, 25 articles were selected from an initial universe of 75.

Development: The analysis revealed the historical evolution and pedagogical basis of global surgical simulation. When evaluating the Kirkpatrick model, a scientific gap was identified in the transfer of skills to complex open surgeries. In light of international trends focused on high-cost virtual technologies, the authors adopt a contextualized critical stance for the Cuban context, where material limitations are overcome by optimizing the integration of teaching and healthcare services and by validating low-cost simulators with high didactic fidelity.

Conclusions: The theoretical-methodological foundations and perspectives of surgical simulation in postgraduate education in General Surgery were analysed. Global surgical simulation tends toward educational standardization. In Cuba, its application is limited; however, local experiences have demonstrated its feasibility. The study substantiates the need for a curricular design adapted to the national reality.
