Abstract

Background: knowledge about the therapy of the most frequent diseases in the elderly is an educational need to achieve a proper therapy.
Objective: to diagnose the educational needs of medical students on the therapy of the most common diseases in the elderly.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out between from January to June 2023, in the Medicine program at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences. The combination of a group of theoretical methods provided elements on development, historical evolution and updating of the topic investigated. In addition, empirical methods were used: interviews with teachers and managers related to the teaching-learning process, and a questionnaire with students. The analysis of different information sources made it easier to organize, classify and present the most relevant aspects.
Results: educational needs were identified once the questionnaire was applied. 26.70% of the students incorrectly answered the question related to the treatment of high blood pressure when it coexists with heart failure; 80% did not know how to justify the selection of nitrovasodilators in ischemic heart disease, and 50% did not adequately classify the medications to be used in bronchial asthma.
Conclusions: educational needs were diagnosed in medical students on the therapy of the most common diseases in the elderly.
