Academic burnout and engagement in fifth-year Stomatology students

Abstract

Background: the Burnout Syndrome, recognized as the syndrome of physical or mental exhaustion or wear, constitutes a problem of current social repercussion to which the university students do not escape.
Objective:
to determine the magnitude of the dimensions of academic burnout present in Stomatology students and the perception of the dimensions of academic engagement.
Methods:
an observational, descriptive and transversal investigation was carried out between January and March 2017; Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction and empirical; questionnaire MBI-SS 15 and UWES-S 17, and mathematical-statistical methods for absolute and relative frequencies.
Results:
high levels of emotional exhaustion and low levels of depersonalization were observed in the burnout dimensions. In reference to the engagement dimensions, high levels of Vigor and Dedication and medium and high levels of Absorption were observed.
Conclusions:
the magnitudes of the academic burnout dimensions were determined, and the perception of the dimensions of academic engagement present in the students.
